An Kindness of People We Don't Know: The Way a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Obtain the Role That Transformed My Existence

In the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a low-cost journey to Europe with a companion. Because my friend was considering pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had booked a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a big 10-storey building on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the dining hall, where we got some food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with people eating there.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at Columbia University. He inquired what I did for a living, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – close to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He recommended that I ought to seek a role with them. I laughed it off, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that night. The man from Iraq approached me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off explained to my host that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a place where everything seems achievable – she declared: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I was granted no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I can't recall his identity, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in multiple respects. I lacked the courage or self-belief to contact anyone at an prestigious college and seek a position. And, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university paved the way for a position in Switzerland where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I am raising four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That benevolent individual redirected my path in life, and I’m forever grateful.
